nsubj: nominal subject

A nominal subject is a noun phrase which is the syntactic subject of a clause and which controls the verb contained within the clause.

Examples

Bha Ludovic ‘na chabhaig

Ludovic was in a hurry’

Thiormaich e e fhéinHe dried himself’

In a clefted copular construction, the relative particle takes nsubj:

Am b’ i Mairearad a rinn an dàn seo?

‘Was it Mairearad who made this song?’

In zero-copula constructions (Sin e, Seo mise) the first word is the root and the second word is the nominal subject:

Sin e dìreach mar a thachair do chroitearan Bheàrnaraigh.

‘That’s it just as it happened to the crofters of Berneray.’
