PART:
Definition
Particles are function words that must be associated with another word or phrase to impart meaning and that do not satisfy definitions of other universal parts of speech.
Examples
- negation: nē “not”, prohibitive ma
- modality markers: optative particle ēw
- aspect markers: perfective be and imperfective hamē
- focus marker: =iz
Border cases
The aspect markers be and hamē derive from adverbs: be from bē “out, away”, hamē “continuously”. The adverbial interpretation is the preferred option in case of doubt.
If =iz is used as additive marker “also”, we take it as an adverb.
