Tense:
This feature takes the following values: Past, Pres.
There are two stems in Middle Persian:
- the inherited imperfective stem for the so-called ‘present’, in which injunctive, indicative and imperfect coincided
- the inherited verbal adjective, which became a perfective participle and eventually a stem, which is commonly referred to as past stem.
Following traditions, these two stem are referred to as tense stem. Infinitives and verbal nouns are not marked for tense.
The elements of analytic verb forms are analysed individually.
Past: Past tense (or perfective aspect, respectively)
The feature ‘past’ is only annotated with the so-called past participle, e.g. raft “moved, gone”
Pres: Present tense (or imperfective aspect, respectively)
The feature ‘present’ is annotated with finite verb forms and the present participle, e.g. rawēnd “(they) move, go”, rawān “moving”.
