DET
: determiner
Definition
Determiners are words that modify nouns or noun phrases and express the reference of the noun phrase in context. That is, a determiner may indicate whether the noun is referring to a definite or indefinite element of a class, to a closer or more distant element, to an element belonging to a specified person or thing, to a particular number or quantity, etc.
The traditional grammar of Slovenian does not define determiners as a separate word class. Instead, words that perform the syntactic function of determiners are either categorizied as quantifying adverbs (nekaj “some”, veliko “a lot of”, dovolj “enough of” etc.) or various kinds of pronouns (ta “this”, ves “all”, moj “my”, vsak “each” etc.).
In accordance with the universal recommendations on delimiting determiners from other classes, determiners in Slovenian constitute a closed class incporporating pronominal and adverbial words predominantly used in attributive roles. These words are marked as DET
regardless of whether they are used as attributives (To besedilo je nerazumljivo. “This text is incomprehensible.”) or substantives (To sem že slišal. “I have heard this before.”).
