ADV: adverb

The English ADV tag covers all uses of PTB tags RB, RBR, RBS, and WRB except the clausal negation not and reduced forms of it, which become PART. It also covers the abbreviations “i.e.” and “e.g.”, which PTB tags as FW.

ADVs with PronType

Pro-forms tagged as ADV receive a PronType feature. Such items are listed in the tables below.

WH Lemma (WRB) PronType
how, why PronType=Int or PronType=Rel
when, where, whither PronType=Dem or PronType=Int or PronType=Rel
however,1 whenever, wherever PronType=Int or PronType=Rel
wherein PronType=Rel

PronType=Rel applies when these trigger a relative construction—see acl:relcl for details. When they are interrogative, they receive PronType=Int. When they simply help specify a place or time, they are PronType=Dem. For example:

WH Lemma PronType=Dem PronType=Int PronType=Rel
when When the clock struck twelve, the spell wore off. When did the spell wear off? the moment when the clock struck twelve
wherever Wherever he lives, I won’t rest until I find him.2 Wherever you see a stain, apply a dab of cleaner.

Non-WH lemmas are less ambiguous:

Non-WH Lemma PronType
here, now, then, there PronType=Dem
neither, never, nowhere PronType=Neg
always, everywhere PronType=Tot
anyplace, anytime, anywhere PronType=Ind
someplace, sometime(s), somewhere PronType=Ind
ever, either PronType=Ind

  1. However tagged as RB (the most frequent usage) does not receive PronType

  2. This is a special type of interrogative clause known as an exhaustive conditional adjunct (CGEL pp. 761–764). In this construction the interrogative WH-ever word alternates with no matter WH or regardless of WH (No matter where he lives…).
