SCONJ: subordinating conjunction
Definition
A subordinating conjunction is a conjunction that links constructions by making one of them a constituent of the other. The subordinating conjunction typically marks the incorporated constituent which has the status of a (subordinate) clause.
We recognize two subclasses of subordinating conjunctions:
- complementizers such as որ/or “that”, թէ/t’ē “that, whether”
- subordinators introducing adverbial clauses such as երբ/erb “when”, եթէ/et’ē “if”, որպէսզի/orpēszi “so that”, որովհետեւ/orovhetew “because”, նախքան/naxk’an “before” (when introducing a clause rather than a noun phrase).
Note that in Western Armenian there are no dedicated relativizers.
For coordinating conjunctions, see CCONJ.
Examples
- որ/or “that”, թէ/t’ē “that, whether”
- թէեւ/t’ēew, թէպէտ/t’ēpēt “though”
- եթէ/et’ē “if”
- քան/k’an “than”
- ուստի/owsti “hence”
