Clf: classifier
Classifiers are nouns that precede a personal name and classify its referent. The classifier ta “señora” is used before the names of women. The classifier is attached to the name it classifies with the clf relation.
Examples
- [cux] Ta Marian ndatata. “María es mujer.”
Relat: relational
Relational nouns are nouns that take a possessor and express a relation to it. They are used to encode obliques, similar to words such as “top” in English or “lado” in Spanish, and also extend to meanings such as “with” (nukut “con él”).
The most frequent relational noun is the possessive base ñeʼe, which is inflected for its possessor (ñeʼë “de mí”, ñeʼed “de ti”, ñeʼe “de él”, ñeʼen “de nosotros”, ñeʼey “de ellos”) and is used to express possession, for example as the predicate of “X is mine/yours”.
Examples
- [cux] Kuetíchi kon ñeʼed. “Esa canasta es tuya.”
- [cux] Gua yana ñeʼë. “No tengo perro.”
- [cux] Ká ama it dítuu tumin techkó noʼo nukut. “Compré una mula para acarrear leña.”
