case:pred
: predicative particles
In Welsh, nominal predicates need a special particle yn. The same particle is used for adjectives in adverbial position
Examples
Mae Mair yn athro “Mair is a teacher”
Mae Ioan yn gryf “Ioan is strong”
- Mae Ioan yn cerdded yn gyflym “Ioan is running fast”
N.B.: the predicative particle yn triggers soft mutation on the following noun and adjective. It must not be confused with the imperfect TAM yn (before verbnouns) which does not trigger any mutation and the prepostion yn “in” which triggers nasal mutation
