The most frequent coordinating conjunction ud ‘and’ is written with a simple stroke that allows for other interpretations as well (e.g. a word-end marker). It is also often omitted in the manuscripts, and sometimes one finds additional strokes that can hardly be considered coordinators.
The connective ud can therefor not be established beyond doubt, but there are recurrent patterns, and comparison with New Iranic languages makes the existence of a non-coordinating ud, which only marks phrasal borders, likely.
It typically occurs after subclauses or hanging topics that precede the matrix clause and as a host of enclitic pronouns.
